Located north of New York City in the Hudson Valley, the Fishkill Art Camp is a 4608 square foot home and art studio. A steel and concrete foundation supports four prefabricated 12’-0” wide modules that wrap around a site built great room. Above, six prefabricated roof modules with clerestory windows enclose the space while offering views toward the nearby mountains. Floor to ceiling glass sliding doors create expansive views toward the Hudson River. Linear clerestory windows along the north, east, and south façade provide privacy, natural light, and the opportunity for natural ventilation.

On the first floor, the importance of studio and gallery space for the artist client guided the program organization to allow for a generous shared kitchen, dining, living, and work zone. A master wing with a bedroom, closet, and bathroom establishes solitude for the owners while the guest wing yields two utilitarian bedrooms and a bathroom for family members or friends. A 12’-0” x 64’-0” outdoor deck for entertainment, dining, playing fetch with dogs, and watching sunsets emphasizes the importance of collective space. Custom millwork throughout contributes ample storage space containing hanging rods, drawers, adjustable shelves, etc. to boost functionality and reduce size.

The exterior materials — metal corrugated siding, metal standing seam roof, azek, and cedar — are enduring to achieve minimal upkeep. A large overhang administers shade throughout the day. On the interior, the large format floor tiles and the concrete countertop over the island allow for easy cleanup after painting sessions. The black steel panels provide ample wall space for displaying art via magnetic hangers while the white oak millwork adds warmth throughout. The Fishkill Art Camp’s multipurpose indoor and outdoor spaces create a dynamic place for local or visiting artists to share their art and ideas in the Hudson Valley through the seasons.
